From Agentic Assistants to Agentic Automation

I want to start this article with a big Thank You to my good friend John Duigenan, IBM General Manager of Financial Services, whose insightful article on Agentic Assistants inspired me to explore this topic further. Having been deeply involved in the field of automation software for many years, I see this as an opportunity to take the conversation to the next level—from Agentic Assistants to the broader concept of Agentic Automation.

Agentic Automation: Unlocking Value Through Autonomous Orchestration

The rise of Agentic Automation represents a pivotal moment for the automation industry, one where generative AI (GenAI) advances are no longer just augmenting processes but are transforming the very fabric of how organizations create value. From my perspective, the evolution from task-based automation to autonomous, orchestrated ecosystems opens unprecedented opportunities for businesses across industries. However, the core imperative remains: creating and delivering tangible value. Understanding how to make this value feasible and actionable is essential for companies to thrive in this new era.

What is Agentic Automation?

At its core, Agentic Automation refers to AI-powered systems that go beyond predefined workflows to mimic knowledge workers. These systems augment cognitive tasks, process unstructured data, and make autonomous decisions. By leveraging GenAI, Agentic Automation not only increases operational efficiency but also unlocks new possibilities for business innovation, such as:

  • Autonomous Business Operations: Systems that independently handle end-to-end processes.

  • AI-Assisted Development: Democratizing development by empowering both technical and citizen developers.

  • Human Augmentation: Enhancing human capabilities by taking over repetitive or complex tasks.

The defining features of Agentic Automation include reasoning, learning, and taking independent actions. These capabilities ensure that AI-powered agents not only assist but orchestrate and innovate—creating measurable outcomes that businesses can depend on.

Creating Value: The Core Imperative

Value creation is the foundation of any successful innovation. For Agentic Automation to realize its full potential, companies must ensure its applications drive measurable impact. The question is not just “what can this technology do?” but “how does it transform business outcomes?” Here are key ways organizations can achieve this:

  1. Strategic Alignment

  2. Value Engineering

  3. Orchestration and Integration

  4. Governance and Compliance

Making Value Feasible Across Industries

The impact of Agentic Automation varies by industry, but the principles of value creation remain the same. Let’s explore how companies in different markets can harness this technology:

Financial Services

  • Use Case: Intelligent fraud detection and autonomous risk management.

  • Value Proposition: Reduce financial losses, enhance compliance, and improve customer trust.

  • My Implementation Suggestion: Deploy multimodal LLMs to analyze transaction patterns and detect anomalies in real time, integrated with BOAT* platforms for seamless orchestration.

*BOAT: Business Orchestration and Automation Technologies

Healthcare

  • Use Case: AI-driven patient care and administrative automation.

  • Value Proposition: Improve patient outcomes, reduce operational inefficiencies, and lower costs.

  • My Implementation Suggestion: Utilize Agentic Automation to process medical records, schedule appointments, and support clinical decision-making through autonomous reasoning.

Manufacturing

  • Use Case: Predictive maintenance and supply chain optimization.

  • Value Proposition: Minimize downtime, improve production efficiency, and enhance inventory management.

  • My Implementation Suggestion: Leverage AI agents to analyze IoT data, predict equipment failures, and optimize supply chain logistics autonomously.

Retail

  • Use Case: Personalized customer engagement and inventory automation.

  • Value Proposition: Boost sales, improve customer loyalty, and reduce waste.

  • My Implementation Suggestion: Deploy intelligent assistants to analyze customer data, provide tailored recommendations, and manage inventory in real-time.

Overcoming Challenges

While the promise of Agentic Automation is immense, its adoption comes with challenges:

  1. Integration Complexity: Combining disparate technologies and legacy systems can be resource-intensive.

  2. High Costs: Training AI models and maintaining transparency require significant investment.

  3. Vendor Lock-In Risks: Centralizing automation under a single platform could limit flexibility.

To overcome these challenges, companies must:

  1. Consolidate tools under a BOAT framework for streamlined management.

  2. Invest in training employees on AI and automation skills, such as prompt engineering and workflow orchestration.

  3. Establish partnerships with vendors that prioritize interoperability and scalability.

A Personal Reflection

Agentic Automation is not just a technological evolution—it is a paradigm shift. From my perspective, its greatest potential lies in its ability to empower organizations to focus on innovation rather than routine operations. By automating cognitive tasks and enabling autonomous decision-making, businesses can redirect their resources toward creativity and strategic growth. Always remember, value hunting is what everyone is looking for!

However, success requires more than adopting cutting-edge technology. It demands a commitment to aligning automation initiatives with organizational goals, fostering collaboration across teams, and investing in platforms that support intelligent orchestration. The true value of Agentic Automation lies in its ability to transform not just processes, but the very way companies operate and compete.

Conclusion

Agentic Automation represents the next frontier in the AI and automation landscape. By focusing on value creation and embracing unified orchestration platforms, businesses across industries can unlock the full potential of this transformative technology. The journey may be complex, but the rewards (greater efficiency, innovation, and impact) make it an imperative for forward-thinking organizations.

Let us embrace this evolution and shape a future where automation is not just a tool but a partner in driving success.
